INTO THE DEEP WITH ALBERTA FERRETTI

Ferretti has us diving deep into a fantasy world of seashells – a perennial favorite of the Spring/Summer season. But these aren’t your mini shell anklets or surfer cowrie shell necklaces. GINKO SYMBOLISM AT PORTS 1961

The ginkgo leaf sprouted amongst the jewels on the runway at Ports 1961 Spring 2021 show. Perhaps creative director Karl Templer chose it for its meaning  –resilience, hope, peace, love, magic, timelessness, and long life – as a powerful symbol we so desperately need during these troubling times.Jewelry details from Ports 1961 Spring 2021 collectionJewelry details from Ports 1961 Spring 2021 collectionJewelry details from Ports 1961 Spring 2021 collectionJewelry details from Ports 1961 Spring 2021 collection

Fall 2020 Jewelry Trends from Milan & Paris Fashion Week Part Two

We’re continuing our coverage from the runways of Milan and Paris Fashion week with part two of all the jewels spotted at the  Fall 2020 RTW collections of Andrew Gn, Dior, Givenchy, Mugler, Off-White, Maison Margiela and Dries Van  Noten.

TREASURE TROVE AT ANDREW GN

Is there such thing as over embellishment?  Goodness, we hope not.  Gn has conceived collections based on his mastery for maximalism (take note of the gems from his SS2019 collection) and for the FW 2020 season, he upped the ante to feature jaw-dropping massive jewel-tone chandelier earrings and collars. As WWD states -such opulence could easily have felt as OTT  but Gn is a consummate storyteller who knows just where the limit of over-embellishment is — even if he did toe that line on occasion.

BAUBLES AND FLOWERS AT DRIES VAN NOTEN

“It’s about nightlife…” Van Noten said backstage after his show according to WWD. “Going out, enjoying life, having fun — [fun is] very important — and a party girl. [There’s] something mysterious, something dark, something romantic, but a dark romance.” Van Noten displayed that theme with huge exaggerated floral chokers covered in jewel-tone sequins paired with silver and gold disco ball-shaped earrings and necklaces. A true ’70s homage to all things flashy and decadent.

FUTURISTIC GEMS AT MUGLER

If we’re picturing what jewelry would look like in the future this would be it. Mugler designer Casey Cadwallader takes us into the next realm with spiny and spiky hoops and collars adorned at the tips with multi-colored gems.

SEASIDE SPARKLE AT DIOR

Pearls, enameled fish and coral were the main elements among Dior’s FW 2020 jewels. Our top pick? The hand bracelet covered in sea-themed charms which could very well be the new charm bracelet.

As we recapped the jewels from NYFW and LFW  we’re wrapping up our Fall 2020 coverage with all the gems spotted at Milan & Paris Fashion Week and trust us there was plenty!  So much so that we’re dividing our coverage into two parts!

SCULPTURAL SUBLIME AT Y/PROJECT

Belgian designer Glenn Martens has truly mastered the art of combining metals and volumes to create sculpturally unique and coveted earpieces for the brand. Who could forget their beaded spiral earrings that were spotted on just about every A-list star?

SILVER SYMBOLISM AT ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

According to WWD.com  McQueen designer, Sarah Burton took a trip to Wales where she soaked up the romantic poetry of Dylan Thomas, Welsh national costumes, the healing power of the color red and the folk art traditions of graphic quilts. The result? Chunky silver jewels dripping with folk art animal motifs like ducks, foxes, and rabbits. Traditional Welsh love spoons caught Burton’s eye too. Elaborately carved from a single piece of wood, these spoons were typically presented to the object of one’s affection, with motifs suggesting love and eternity that Burton worked into puffed silver heart pendants engraved with Celtic circles.

CROSS CULTURE AT CHANEL

Throughout the 72-look collection, there was one reigning theme that all the looks had in common and that was the quintessential Maltese cross spotted amongst the Byzantine costume-jewelry cuffs and necklaces that Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel herself loved.

GOLD GLAM AND GLITTER AT BALMAIN

We’re not really sure where Olivier Rousteing was going by pairing chunky gold link jewels with dramatic crystal-embellished scorpion earrings and necklaces but if he was going for something theatrical with the gems for the FW 2020 Balmain season he achieved it.

RETRO GLAM AT MIU MIU

Miuccia Prada gave us a moment of pure escape at Miu Miu with dramatic collars and brooches of glitzy red and blue crystals reminding us of the over-the-top jewels of Old Hollywood. She set the stage for a collection that was a reminder of “charm as positivity.”  According to her show notes the power of fashion sparks joy and on that note what amount of sparkle doesn’t spark joy?

HOLDING HANDS AT VALENTINO

Like the Chanel show, Pierpaolo Piccioli had one theme on his mind when designing the jewels at Valentino – hands. A hand cradling a gem or embracing a jeweled flower were spotted dangling from the ears and necks of the models. Perhaps Piccioli was trying to send out a message? After all hands symbolize loyalty, strength, romance, and fidelity. Definitely a sign we need during these difficult times.
