It’s the first Monday in May and you know what that means: it’s the Super Bowl of Fashion, otherwise known as the Met Gala! This year was dedicated to the legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld and, according to the Met, both the evening and the exhibition explore “the artistic methodology and stylistic vocabulary of Karl Lagerfeld’s designs through recurring themes across more than 65 years, from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019.”
There were plenty of jewelry looks that paid homage to the late fashion designer. Decadent pearls popped on rings, earrings, and necklaces proving to be a popular choice amongst the fashion elite. The gem is a favored motif of Chanel, the fashion house where Karl spent 36 years as head designer.
Another link to Chanel came courtesy of Rihanna with her black and white Fulco cuff which was inspired by the original Maltese Cross Cuffs that Verdura designed for Chanel in the 1930s.
Cara Delevingne made her own homage to Lagerfeld by draping herself in gothic sterling silver Chrome Hearts jewels. The LA-based luxury brand’s jewels were a favorite of Karl as he was rarely seen in public without his Chrome Hearts jewelry.
There were many scene-stealing diamond jewelry looks too. Doja Cat’s custom Messika headpiece with its 7-carat pear-shaped central diamond comes to mind. How could we not mention Dua Lipa’s eye-popping Tiffany & Co. necklace with that hard-to-miss sparkly central 200-carat diamond? The red carpet was abuzz when Priyanka Chopra showed off her spectacular Bulgari necklace. The piece featured an ultra-rare 11.6-carat Fancy Laguna Blu Diamond which will be sold at Sotheby’s, and expected to fetch $25 million!
