Marilyn famously adored her diamonds and her character Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (shown down below with co-star Jane Russell)  delivered the legendary performance of “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.”

The film’s storyline also includes a proposal, as Lorelei’s romance with wealthy heir Gus Esmond reaches its sparkling conclusion.

In real life, Monroe received her character’s engagement ring early in the film and wore it in nearly every scene thereafter. She even kept the ring after filming as a memento of her first “big” movie role.

At the time, Monroe was already a box-office sensation, but the studios still underpaid her! Jane Russell reportedly earned between $100,000 and $200,000, while Marilyn made just around $18,000 (around $1,500 per week). It was during this production that Monroe finally secured her own dressing room after famously reminding Fox executives, “I am the blonde, and it is Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.”

That diamond ring came to symbolize Monroe’s rise to power, her fight to the top and in many ways, Taylor’s ( a showgirl herself) own diamonds and her engagement ring, mark her own sparkle in love and success.
